Sama Mall was part of an international competition in 2012 to redesign the façade of a shopping mall in Kuwait City. The primary brief objective was to create a unique and attention grabbing façade design which would set this mall apart from its competitors – nationally as well as in the wider GCC region.

PHASE3’s proposed design aims to distinguish themselves from the typical mall design, which often uses a multitude of different materials and shapes and therefore reduces the possibility to become a strong and memorable image. As a consequence, the volume of the building was simplified into one unifying gesture with a continuous parapet.

Geometric patterns, with their iconic quality, make up one of the three non-figural types of decoration in Islamic art. These abstract designs not only adorn the surfaces of monumental Islamic architecture but also function as the major decorative element on a vast array of objects of all types.

Through variations in arrangement and size, the overall scale of the façade is locally broken down and creates a playful rhythm. The pattern is used to express the volumetric of the building itself, but also to distinguish and emphasise the entry points.
