The Gate Mall was part of an international competition in 2012 to redesign the façade of a shopping mall in Kuwait City. The competition design by PHASE3 was eventually chosen and had been executed. The primary brief objective was to create a unique and attention grabbing façade design which would set this mall apart from its competitors – nationally as well as in the wider GCC region.

Over the course of the day the shadows cast onto the façade change in quality and intensity and result in the unique visual character. At night, the effect is emphasised by the incorporated lighting concept. The 300m long façade design creates a strong visual impact that can be perceived from the adjacent motorway. Kuwait’s harsh climate had a substantial part in the choice of material and construction method. Pattern variations of recess sizes use the whole length of the building for the distinct play of shadows and scale.

PHASE3’s idea distinguishes itself from the typical mall design, which often uses a multitude of different materials and shapes and therefore reduces the possibility to become a strong and memorable image. As a consequence, the volume of the building was simplified into one unifying gesture with a continuous parapet in order to form a clear unity with a strong identity. With its large scale, this façade provided a unique opportunity to create a distinctive landmark and the lasting image of a new shopping destination.
