The Tannery

The Tannery
London – UK

Client: Private
Program: Office Space
Size: 2300 m²
Year: Design in Progress

Situated close to Tower Bridge and adjacent to a large railway viaduct, the building site sits within existing four to seven storey buildings reaching back to Victorian times. The proposed 8-storey office building will replace an existing introverted three storey office building with extensions from the early 2000s together with adjacent courtyards.

The overall scale and massing of the building responds to its surroundings by stepping up into three distinct volumes, with slight variation in façade design and materiality. The arrangement of these interlocking volumes and the articulation of the colours, brick and window openings add a relateable scale and feel to the building in relation to its neighbours. It adds a contemporary and innovative design while responding to the site’s industrial heritage.

Taking inspiration from the existing surrounding buildings, the proposed scheme integrates itself within the context through careful massing and selected use of materials. The neighbouring buildings, especially the historic warehouses, use London stock brick in traditional colours, with highlights of light coloured stones set against darker ones. The scheme responds to the selected palette of materials drawn from the surrounding context by applying complementary materials to the proposed façade. The re-development of The Tannery will add value to its surrounding and continue shaping a strong identity inside its neighbourhood close to the nearby Street Markets.
